Eastern Front 1944 - The Battle of Narva. (Estonia).
The Battles in Eastern Estonia in the area of the ancient city of Narva lasted from late January 1944 through the Summer months until late September, when as a result of the great Soviet Summer offensive starting ironically on the 22nd of June which broke apart the Frontline of the Army Groups North and Centre in Russia and led to a 720 Kilometre advance to the Gates of Warsaw, Army Abteilung "Narva" was outflanked and the Axis forces were forced to finally withdraw from Estonia and the country was once again occupied by the Soviet Union.
Men from many nations fought in the Waffen SS units at Narva, Germans, Danes, Swedes,Dutchmen, Flemings, Norwegians and of course Estonians and Russians and the Battle subsequently became known as the Battle of the European SS due to the numbers of Volunteers from the above European countries who served in the Units of the III (Germanisches ) SS Panzer Korps who were committed to the fighting.
Three Russian Armies were engaged against the German Forces in this titanic struggle for a City and area which for centuries has been one of the traditional gateways from the East into Europe.
Our Tour is a result of personal interest and research over many years into this Battle and the role palyed by the Foreign volunteer units of the Waffen SS and the fighting in Estonia and our aim is to provide a Tour that enables our Guests to gain an excellent understanding of these Historic events and an insight into the War on the Eastern Front, the largest and bloodiest campaign ever fought.
